37-2, Defending State Champs, winners of Asics Challenge and countless other invitationals, the Roman Empire of Kentucky High School Volleyball. Everyone in the country expects another trophy for the Lady Rockets of Assumption.
Henry Clay, however, has a different story. 23-16, 4th best in Region 11 Regular Season. Escaped the Regional Final in 5 sets vs Tates Creek after blowing 2-0 lead. Nonetheless, they can easily be called the "giant killer" of Private Schools after stunning Mercy last year in the Round of 16.
Two vastly different roads to the State Finals. One team basically gets a reserved seat at State every year while the other has to fight for every win in an improving region. Should things go as planned, Assumption and Henry Clay are scheduled to meet tomorrow in the semifinals of the 2012 State Volleyball Championship.
Time to break it down: On paper this looks like a straightforward fixture for Assumption. They're KY Volleyball royalty and proved that by beating HC 2-0 last year in route to another title. But don't write off the Lady Devils at all. Just look at their schedule so far. They have prepared for this moment. If anyone has the potential to knock off Assumption, it will be Henry Clay. Top to bottom, this team is the best we've seen in awhile. They put up Assumption-like numbers against Russell today in the first round, not giving up more than 12 points in any set in a 3-0 rout.
Prediction: This feels like the perfect time for HC to make the run of a lifetime. I'm calling a 2-1 upset of epic proportions for the Lady Devils tomorrow over Assumption tomorrow. This is the year that HC finally reaches the top of the ladder.
Rest of the tournament: A win over Assumption will consequently lead to a matchup with Mercy or the lower bracket winner in the Final. I'm not sure Mercy will survive. So here we go: HENRY CLAY WILL WIN THE 2012 STATE TITLE. It's a bold call, but I have a feeling the ladies can back it up. This is the year. -Trevor Kennedy, Pulse of the Blue Devils

Grading HC vs Scott County
A rough night for the Blue Devils as they were blown out by Scott County 69-34. Time to break it down.
Passing: C Countless number of fumbles in pocket and missed opportunities. Not entirely Carter's fault.
Rushing: A- Elijah Bell found a way to have another stellar game in a rout. Several big gains including multiple scores.
Receiving: B+ Austin Black was forced to carry the receiving corps on his back. The rest were simply average.
Offensive and Defensive Line: F It was a disaster up front. Not at all a good performance. Lots of confusion.
Linebackers: B Had a lot to juggle with the rest of the defense. Cole McCarty stood out with several key tackles to stop the bleeding temporarily.
Defensive Backs: D The back 4 were beat a lot over the top. Poor performance.
Overall: D Just a rough night for HC. Not much more to say.

Grading UK Football
New segment on the site. Here's my letter grade analysis of the UK vs USC game.
QB: C- Not a great performance. The inconsistency woes continue at quarterback for UK.
RB: D No Wildcat halfback over 60 yes rushing.
Defense: A- The held off SC as long as they could. Props to the D for stepping up and giving UK a chance early.
Coaching: F I don't think you can say much more other than that game management by the Cats Staff in the 2nd half was terrible.
Overall: B UK surprised lots of peoe including myself. Showed they could play with the big boys for awhile, but they aren't playing to their full potential.

HC Football draws Ballard in first round of State Tournament
The HC Football Team knows the road they must travel in order to keep their season alive. The Devils were seeded to play Ballard High School in Louisville next Friday. A win would equal a date with either Oldham or Scott County in the second round. Gametime is 7:30 pm on Friday, November 4.
HC Volleyball ends state tournament with 2-0 loss to #1 Assumption
It was a gloomy day at Bellarmine University today as the top-seed Assumption Rockets put away the #4 Henry Clay Blue Devils in the Quarterfinals of the 2011 KHSAA State Volleyball Tournament. The Lady Devils fell behind early, losing the first set 25-8. The second half was slightly more competitive, but in the end, the Rockets rolled beating Henry Clay by a final score of 25-8, 25-17. The Devils exit the tournament after upsetting #2 Mercy in the opening round. HC's Jordan Strickland was named to the State All-Tournament Team.
